This morning driving to a meeting with a client I was in the left turn lane at an intersection of a busy multiple lane road. Not one to look at text messages, emails or other items on my phone while driving I noticed a car across the island from me going in the same direction as me. This meant she was clearly going the wrong way, Westbound, while the right of way traffic was going Eastbound.
In fact, she probably assumed she was in the right hand lane where in reality the traffic coming toward her would be in the left hand lane and typically going fast. Fortunately, we were at a red light. I was able to get her attention and quickly explain the situation. At first she didn’t believe or accept that there was anything wrong.
What may have triggered the ‘Oh, I get it!’ reaction was when I said, ‘When the light changes someone may get hurt or at the very least cars will be wrecked.’ Quickly she followed my suggestion of signaling and quickly executing a u-turn which placed her in the actual right hand lane heading in the proper direction.
Mission accomplished.
This is a small example of me helping someone who was clearly going the wrong way.
When considering how 30% to 40% of my one on one and group coaching clients work with me to help them with their job search, career growth and related skills – well this is exactly how this started some years ago. Through a group conversation or a networking meeting I would hear someone say, ‘Well I’m looking for a new job.’
And then in response to ‘What are you looking for?’ The majority of the time the answer would be either:
1. ‘Anything around here really’. OR
2. ‘A full description of their resume, past work experience, why they are looking for a new job now’. Is anyone even listening?
It was clear to me these people were heading in the wrong direction.
The approach is heavy on being intentional, having focus and understanding oneself. This is what we build on together.
This is a process that works. No one else brings people along plus the accountability necessary to keep them moving in the right direction to obtain the job they are seeking.
Here is why this is the topic for this year end article.
In the next few weeks there will be opportunities to obtain specific information for people seeking to obtain the job they want. For people to understand and select the type of career they want.
This may be for you or for someone you know or both. The best way to learn about the what, when, and where is to click this link and become part of the community who will hear about it first.
