Do you know the words you can no longer say in public?
This is especially true when speaking in front of an audience, at a networking event, conducting a business meeting, during a job interview (on either side), on your first date, and at a family wedding.
There’s more, however, you get the idea.
There are a new set of words and topics that are essentially off limits unless you intend to set off some real fireworks.
George Carlin had numerous hilarious skits. By far his number one rated skit is – “The Seven Words You Can Never Say On TV” also known as “Filthy Words”.
By today’s Cable All Day Every Day standards no big deal, however, still holds true for the regular TV broadcasts.
This skit has me thinking about the words and phrases we just can’t use in regular everyday conversations any longer.
In fact, it goes even further because you can’t write them on social media or say them on camera. Someone will absolutely be offended and then who knows how things may escalate from there.
Now I’m assuming no harm is intended and it’s just an opinion piece or other write up, or you’re teaching a course or giving a talk or participating in a group activity.
You use certain words or phrases to describe something and then BOOM!
People are yelling at you.
Someone has a video and it’s going viral.
The context is gone and some audio editing has been done.
News crews and reporters are at your doorstep.
What exactly is going on?
What happened to civil conversation and engaging disagreement discussions?
Is any of this a result of the two to three year lock downs from Covid-19? The physical isolation of not being physically in the presence of other people?
It seems like any time the ‘wrong’ words or phrases are stated it’s like someone tossed a match onto a puddle of gasoline.
How do we resolve this issue?
What are your thoughts?
