Would you become a Whistleblower?
You may either be aware of something going on at the workplace or a treatment or product you have utilized. Or it’s something else. No one seems to know about the issues you know about. Other people may be at risk if someone doesn’t do or say something.
Would you be that someone?
Let’s understand some of the risks to you personally and your immediate family and relatives if you become a whistleblower.
Many of these are negative impacts to your current and future career, legal risks and expense, character assassination, physical harm, threats and isolation to you and your family members from your community and potentially from outside your community.
Any and all of these will have an impact on your mental health and potentially the mental health of your family members.
The question you might ask now is ‘why would anyone risk all of these possible negative risks by becoming a whistleblower’?
There is a certain level of personal satisfaction that a whistleblower may have. This may be from preventing further harm to others or getting back at an organization which didn’t take their claims seriously and may have even road blocked them from addressing their claims.
There are potentially monetary rewards if a claim and suit takes place. These typically run between 10% and 30% of the settlement amount. However, it may take many years to actually receive any money as a court case may take time and there may be an appeal process as well.
So the question remains – Would you become a Whistleblower?
Large corporations, parts of governments, wealthy individuals and a variety of other organizations and people have had their operations questioned and brought forward by whistleblowers.
I’m not here to judge if this is something to do or not.
Throughout the years people have come forward with false claims, made up stories with no factual basis and ultimately their claims are tossed aside as unfounded nonsense. These individuals risk their own defamation suits being brought against them.
