“A ship is meant to be its best while at sea. This is what she was built for and designed to do.” ~ Mitch Tublin
In addition, the daily routine that everyone in the crew aboard the ship gets into is calming in and of itself.
Sure there are times when Mother Nature and Neptune, the King of the Seas seem to be at war with each other. Yet, for the most part everyone is at one with nature and the safe feeling of being aboard their ship.
For example, the daily watch standers at sea in the engine room and on the bridge, each have this specific duty from midnite to 4 AM and then Noon to 4 PM or 0400 to 0800 and 1600 to 2000 or 0800 to 1200 and 2000 to midnite.
These are their eight hour watch standing duties. Arrive at your area to relieve the watch 10 minutes early to get the lay of the land and understand what is going on so when you take over you are ready.
Now consider what happens when the ship is in port and at the dock for a period or time.
Yes, the same watch standers have their duty. However, oftentimes people will swap with someone else so they can have more time ashore.
The person may not show up for their watch duty or their replacement may forget it is their obligation to fill in. There are plenty of shoreside activities ready and waiting to distract the crew as they walk down the gangway into town.
Now how different is that from your interest in applying yourself to either finding a job, growing into your next promotion or preparing to move out of your company to another company either in a similar or different role?
You really haven’t spent the time creating a plan.
You don’t have an accountability partner to help you stay on track.
You didn’t develop a timeline to execute the various moving parts in order to be successful in your goal.
Without handling these items the various distractions of life take on a life of their own.
The next thing you know another six months or a year pass by and you haven’t done anything to speak of.
If you are really ready to take action.
If you are really ready to take on what needs to be done.
If you are really ready to set the goal for yourself and commit to achieving it.
