Walk into any room—a boardroom, a team huddle, or even a coffee shop—and your attitude is already doing the talking.
You might think it’s your posture, your handshake, or your opening line that makes the first impression. But the truth? People feel your attitude before you speak a word. It precedes you like a signal—quiet, but powerful. And as a leader, that signal matters more than you may realize.
“Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude.” — Zig Ziglar
Attitude Isn’t the Weather. It’s the Thermostat.
People often treat attitude like it’s something out of their control, like the weather.
“It’s just one of those days.”
“I woke up on the wrong side of the bed.”
Sound familiar?
Here’s the reality: your attitude isn’t the weather. It’s the thermostat.
You set it. You adjust it. You control how it impacts you and those around you.
A sour attitude, left unchecked, can quietly stall progress. On the other hand, a grounded, positive attitude has the power to shift a team’s energy, open up creativity, and spark forward motion.
“The remarkable thing is, we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day.” — Charles R. Swindoll
Check Your GPS
Let me offer this image. Imagine hopping into your car, loading up your favorite playlist, grabbing a hot coffee, and hitting the road… only to realize 30 miles in that your GPS was set to the wrong destination. You’re cruising—but you’re off course.
That’s what happens when your attitude is misaligned.
Even with the right goals, strong strategies, and a good team—if your outlook is off, your leadership impact will be, too.
As your thinking partner today, I’d encourage you not just to react to the circumstances around you—but to reset the internal GPS. Where is your attitude truly pointing you?
It Starts With You
Leadership isn’t about pretending everything is great. It’s about how you show up—especially when it’s not.
You can’t expect your team to stay motivated and focused if your presence drains more than it inspires. Leadership is presence. And presence is driven by mindset and attitude.
Choose it intentionally. Reset it often. Model it consistently.
Think About This
- What attitude are you really projecting this week?
- How would your team describe it if they were honest?
- Would you follow someone bringing that same energy into the room?
Action Item
- Pick one meeting or interaction this week. Before it begins, pause.
- Set your attitude on purpose.
- Walk in as if your influence depends on it—because it does.
Jot down what shifts when you lead with intentional presence. You may be surprised at how contagious the energy becomes.
Coming Up Next – Part 2: Your Mindset Moves the Needle
In the next part of this series, we’ll unpack how your mindset drives growth and how it’s different from attitude. Think of mindset as the engine behind your leadership—what’s under the hood matters.
