What Does It Take To Motivate?

What Does It Take To Motivate?

What does it take to Motivate?

This may need a fill in the blank at the end.

Something like this –

What does it take to Motivate ____________________ ?

  • the members of my team
  • the people who work for me
  • my co-workers
  • my team mates
  • my spouse
  • my kids
  • the clients I have to buy again
  • those who buy here to leave a review
  • the people in the audience to buy from me
  • and so many more………

What is it about motivation?

Some people say it feels great short term, however, that feeling of being motivated doesn’t have lasting impact.

“If your teacher, coach, or mentor believes you can do something, you’re more likely to do it.”
– Gwen Moran, Fast Company

Individuals who want to motivate others, possibly a person, a group or an entire organization ask the question of themselves and others – “how to motivate so it lasts?”

“Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.”
– Maya Angelou

In any situation in life people resist change.

We as humans are creatures of habit. We feel comfort with what we are accustomed to.

When this type of behavior impacts business or life changes and potential opportunities by opposing them and derailing them with statements like – “it won’t work anyway” or “we just don’t do things that way here”.

It’s time to reevaluate these individuals as to their long term involvement in the organization and relationship.

“People who say it cannot be done should not interrupt those who are doing it.”
– George Bernard Shaw

One of the ways to motivate a team, employees or an individual is by clearly and mutually communicating a purpose. A purpose for what they are working on, who it is for and how it will help the customer.

For the team and groups working together how their individual work is highly valued, however, it is made even more so with their contributions to the team and group efforts.

These type of statements are not magic.

They do not do anything if said sparingly. They additionally do nothing if sent out as a memo or an email. By leadership speaking often and from the heart statements similar to this will motivate and do so continuously.

“I’m a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work the more I have of it.”
– Thomas Jefferson
