Being stuck sucks!
Oh yes, I’ve been there many times too!
Whatever your plans and goals are – finding a job or another one, starting your own business, improving your communication skills to connect better in business, your personal life and relationships overall or another or multiple ones – one thing, ONE THING, is for certain – you know when you’re stuck – and that’s right now!
Back, back, back in the day when ocean-going ships were powered by wind without any engines – when there was no wind – they were stuck. Becalmed is the word.
leave (a sailing vessel) unable to move through lack of wind.
“both boats hung on before the whole fleet was becalmed south of Rampholme”
transitive verb. 1a : to keep motionless by lack of wind. b : to stop the progress of.
Merriam-Webster
STUCK
Here are some of the ways they chose to solve this being stuck situation from recurring as often as it did.
- When there was no wind, they would row. Groups of people on either side of the ship would row together for hours at a time.
- Recognizing that a cross Atlantic Ocean voyage might take anywhere from six weeks to three months – plan accordingly with water and supplies for all aboard.
- Since a sailing ship is usually pushed by winds and currents, it’s Captain must find a route where the wind will most likely blow in the desired direction. The collection of information from other trusted and proven early explorers is how they uncovered the pattern of winds and currents.
There are much deeper implications and historical impact in each of these, however, for today the point is – how does this help you?
ONE
They rowed. This was their Plan B if you will. They had a Plan B. The ship design and structure, the equipment needed and the Manpower were all available by the understanding that days with no wind were going to happen.
What is your Plan B?
TWO
Have supplies. With the expectation of a voyage that may last any where from six weeks to three months the ship had enough of the necessary supplies to survive for this length of time.

If you want to improve your communication skills – have you discussed with people who know you where you may consider improving?
THREE
