Have you been on a cruise ship before?
Take a look at the ads for these voyages now. The ships are really floating hotels, no check that, floating top notch resorts! These ships are so big that many of the locations they visit can’t fit them in. So the ships anchor, anchors away for the seafarers, when they arrive early in the morning. The passengers are ferried to and from the ship in motor launches.
Typically the ship’s whistle blows in the late afternoon and they prepare to depart in the evening for the next destination.
The anchor has come up, hoisted home for the seafarers, and the ship is underway.
What happens if a ship remains at anchor for a long period of time?
One possibility, especially if it really a long time spent at anchor, is the anchor gets stuck.
If the sea bottom is muddy the anchor sinks in deeper. The extra weight of the mud and the need to pull is too much for the anchor chain to pull up. The ship is now stuck. If the ship attempts to pull too much and the anchor chain breaks, they lose an anchor and some anchor chain. Plus now the ship is considered unseaworthy as it is required to have two working anchors.
The answer is to get help.
There are various tugs, divers and cranes which are utilized for various purposes around anchorages all over the world. These people are experts in dealing with these situations.
It may be the first time for this ship, the Captain and the crew, however, these experts handle these situations all of the time. Of course each situation is unique, however, the essential aspects are the same.
