Will You Stop Multitasking?

The Myth of Multitasking
JamesClear.com

Will you stop multitasking?

James Clear and numerous other authors, speakers and a variety of podcasters have been sharing their view the last few years on the detrimental impact on our lives of multitasking.

“Multitasking takes a toll. At home or at work, distractions lead to poor choices, painful mistakes, and unnecessary stress.” Gary W. Keller

Not that long ago, it was a badge of honor to do as many things at once as possible. It was not having a total breakdown that proved you were superhuman.

Sadly, yes, guilty as charged. I did it too.

We both, as a married couple, had our careers, four young children who were active in various sports and school activities. Plus we volunteered and devoted our ‘spare’ – right, who had ‘spare’ – time to various school, community and athletic organizations. If you asked me if I would change anything of that experience – probably not.

In many ways it’s how I’ve become who I am now and hopefully it’s the same for my wife and kids.

However, no one explained to me or shared with me the fact that giving 120% of your attention to one or maybe two things is way better than smaller slivers of yourself to dozens of things. When you’re multitasking you lose some of your cognitive abilities. You lose the ability to filter out what is irrelevant.

Forbes.com published on 01/23/24 the following:
What we perceive as multitasking is actually task-switching, which can reduce productivity by as much as 40%. This constant switching between tasks not only diminishes focus and efficiency but also increases stress and the potential for error.

So the question is why don’t we all agree to stop multitasking?

There will never be an ‘Oscar for Greatest Multitasker’.

Let’s identify a single task and see it through completion before, yes before, devoting ourselves to the next task.

Guilty as charged. I began this specific habit almost five years ago.

However, that is a story for another day.
