When you travel for pleasure isn’t it fun to explore, go to new places, learn about another culture or just kick back and relax?
Upon arriving home, it’s a great feeling too. Right before you get busy with the real world again, it’s just nice to be home. If you have been traveling for work, even more so. You want to refresh yourself.
Similarly, a ship comes to port at the end of a voyage, there is a lot to do.
If the ship has passengers they must disembark. Often at this time there may be crew changes. There may be some parts or repairs scheduled during this time. New supplies, fresh food and linens are brought onboard as well. In general it is a time to refresh the entire vessel. All of this activity has been scheduled in advance.
The time in port is a limited period of time. If it is a cruise ship, new passengers are brought onboard and the ship must get underway for another voyage. If it is a cargo ship, after any cargo destined to be unloaded at this location, any new cargo has been loaded and the ship has been refueled and resupplied it is time to move on to the next port.
The point is the time in port is scheduled out of necessity for all of these reasons. The people coordinating and executing each of these items are experts. They are specialists in their specific area and they understand the time urgency of completing everything.
There is no ‘get it done tomorrow’ when the ship is leaving and may not return to this location for weeks or months.
How about you and your career?
When is the last time you intentionally took the time to assess where you are right now in your career?
Where you want to go in the future in your career advancement?
Is this really what you still want and need?
If yes….
What steps are you intentionally taking toward that advancement?
If not…
What are you intentionally doing toward mapping out what you do want and need?
These questions don’t need to be answered right now.
The point is to schedule an appointment with yourself to reflect, to think about these questions.
If you will not do that, which don’t feel bad most people will not do this alone, arrange an appointment with an expert. An expert who will assist you and guide through this process in order to draw out the answers to each question from you.
It is up to you to decide, however, do not procrastinate!
Now that you are thinking about it take action and do something about it.
