Did you start out running or did you take a couple of steps and fall down and then get up and take a few more steps?
We all took our ‘baby steps’ first.
We learned fast that if there was a table low enough we could kind of hang on to it a little and keeping our balance was easier.
For some reason there is this assumption in an organization that people know how to actually lead people.
In many organizational cultures it gets taken another step and people who are in a leadership position – managers and higher – are expected to know how to coach people who report to them.
The process often starts with a person doing a great job at whatever their role is in the company. An opening in the organization takes place and the person is rewarded with a promotion.
Now it’s like a fish out of water.
There isn’t any formal training on how to manage people, lead people or to coach people.
This process continues as other people who went through this process survived and figured things out so why not continue to do things this way as a ‘that’s how we’ve always done things’ attitude takes over if changes to this process are brought up.
Thankfully the world is a different world now.
Although slowly, people are realizing that as a leader, a manager or a supervisor, your success is dependent on what your people do rather than on what you do. You will not rise up in the organization if your people don’t succeed.
In reality you need them more than they need you!
