Here is the essence of The Reliance Conversation.
Are we in our personal lives and in our business operations becoming too reliant on the internet?
Let’s go a step further and add in electricity as much of the grid which provides our electricity is working through the use of the internet.
In our personal lives how often do we rely on Google Maps or another App for directions and guidance while driving. What would we do if all of a sudden this was not available for our directions while driving especially in an unfamiliar area?
When you call up a family member or a friend or a contact you speak with often – do you actually know their phone numbers by heart or do you speak their name into your phone or select their name from your contact list? What if the ability to use your contact list became unavailable to you?
How do you conduct your banking? Do you utilize online banking – stock trading – filing your tax returns? What would you do if these were no longer available to you?
These are a few personal items. Do you have some other personal areas where you rely upon the internet?
Go to the comment area and note these and then return to here and continue.
How about in your business? Imagine if Amazon was not able to exist? If the internet stopped working how would Amazon operate?
The ability to take inventory would virtually halt as most retail operations utilize bar codes and the internet. Entire sales departments would have issues as their CRM such as SalesForce.com or others are tied together with feeds and output from the internet.
These are a few business items. Do you have other business areas where you rely upon the internet?
Go to the comment area and note these and then return to here and continue.
The question is where is the back up plan? It is more than the duplicate offices which a number of organizations have set up in order to continue operations in a real disaster situation so they may relocate and replicate their office in a large city if something were to happen.
The Reliance Conversation needs to include skill sets which may have now become obsolete. An example is the ability to read a paper map. In fact does anyone even have a paper map in their vehicle any longer?
This is a conversation worth having so use the comments section below and offer your thoughts.
