The practical things say a lot.
Rather in paying attention to the basic practical things in our lives say a lot about you, the people involved and many other areas in our lives. At least if you’re paying attention to them.
The other day there was this outer weather door or some call it a screen door. Why I have no idea since in the northeast this door will not have a screen in it. It will have a storm window in it for 7 months of the year. Yes for the experts even if the screen will stay in the door the storm window part will be slid over the screen for that style of screen door.
Anyway, the screen door we’re speaking about today is the old school (is that phrase okay to say or has it been cancelled out now) take out the storm window put in the screen type of door. This specific screen door was on a home near Long Island Sound. So not exactly the ocean, however, there’s salt water breezes and wind gusts and weather similar to being near the ocean.
If you’re going to do the right thing you’re not going to use straight out of the box standard metal screws for any project with outdoor exposure unless you plan on painting them with a rust proof coating or replacing them each year.
The screws holding the storm window in place were solidly rusted in place. Odds are these screws were installed three or four or more years ago and had not been coated, greased or turned in as long. Now the screen was being requested to be put in place which meant the storm window had to come out. These screws had to be replaced without damaging an older style door.
Let’s stop here. There’s so much more.
Think about the person that originally installed these screws to put the storm window in place.
That’s all they cared about was putting the storm window in place. They didn’t think about the type of screws they were using and what condition they might be in about 7 months from that point no less three or four years down the road.
It really didn’t concern them that someone may want to easily remove them and the storm window to put in the screen. So they really muscled down on these screws to tighten them each as much as possible.
Let’s stop here. Again, there’s so much more.
Think about when you’re working with a team. What happens when you decide to just put your head down and do your part. You know what needs to be done so you’re going to do it and submit it.
Spell Team – there’s no “I”.
Consider a project you have as a consultant. Do you have pride in your work and your deliverable so that it is meaningful and lasts for a good amount of time and you make yourself available to provide updates and maintenance if the client opts for that? Or once you’re gone there are no notes or data to support one thing you’ve done?
The point here is take a look around you and the things you’re involved in from a very practical point of view.
There’s a lot to learn there.
