It’s the first day of summer.
Oh there is something about the start of summer that brings so many thoughts to your mind. Just chilling out and relaxing, reading a few books that you’ve been waiting to read and enjoying what ever comes to mind.
Tonight right when your head is on your pillow a smile is on your face thinking about all these summer activities to take part in. Imagine your surprise the next morning when you wake up and it’s September 3rd! The Tuesday right after the long Labor Day weekend!
Wow! The summer sure went by in the blink of an eye.
This can’t be real I didn’t get to do any of the things I hoped to do.
Okay back to the real world, however, this could very well happen to any of us. As it is for business, without a plan, time does pass us by as other items take up that time and we lose focus on what matters most.
It is the start of summer and there are plenty of things you want to do.
This doesn’t have to become a rigid process, however, here are a few suggestions to give you a chance of not missing out on items on your wish list.
Make a list of everything you want to do and the people involved who are either doing these things with you or are part of the activity.
Include everything you’re thinking of.
Now any of these items that only require you – such as the five books you want to read – create a page just for these.
All of the items where other people are involved, you will need to reach out to them and get them in a conversation about their interest in doing this with you, and their availability so you may begin to establish some kind of timeline.
Speaking of planning and timelines, did you book any travel already for this summer?
If that is part of your wish list – it’s time to get going on those arrangements.
Now you can imagine what your stage of life and career and family will have on this planning process! My wife and I would try our best… many months in advance of the summer… with four children to plan and time certain activities. As often happens, we had to call an audible for one reason or another.
So being flexible and being open to change is really important to making this all work.
Now if all of this seems too ‘work like’ , make it fun for you and the others involved. Use color markers, sticky notes, photos of the activities or have your kids draw some of them. The point is to have fun with this planning project, however, it’s to still have a plan.
By now you get the idea. By having a plan you’re odds become much better to actually get to do the things you want to get done.
By the way, do you think some of these ideas and methods may help with planning at work too?
Just a thought.
