In only a few days aren’t we all sick and tired of hearing about the top New Year’s Resolutions people make in the USA and the statistic that barely 9.2% of people will keep them long enough to become part of the statistic that they kept theirs.
The top favorites in the annual tradition of reviewing the list, talking about the list – making jokes about the list include:
- Lose Weight / Healthier Eating
- Life / Self Improvement
- Better Financial Decisions
- Quit Smoking
- Do More Exciting Things
One thing has always amazed me about this list, which seems to be the exact same list every year. After the night of New Year’s Eve celebrating why these are not on the top of the list?
- Don’t Drive on New Year’s Eve – Take Uber home
- Drink less alcohol
- Get more sleep
- Don’t talk politics at Parties
- Hug and kiss your spouse when the ball drops NOT someone else!
Well enough of all these repetitive non-starters.
We all know what it takes for any one of these to take hold and stick.
#1 – Motivation – why do you need to do it? What will the result be?
#2 – A support system – accountability – potentially others doing it with you at the same time.
#3 – See results – this actually comes from making certain SMART goals methodology is being utilized when declaring the resolution.
In speaking with my coaching clients – they range in age and career paths – many of them said they don’t bother with the whole process of a New Year’s Resolution. I pressed on and asked – “Okay what is there in your career or your personal growth or creating more efficiency – what one specific thing where we could say – here it is a New Year – a new me – I will own this one positive change?”
Now if you read this over again – what would your one specific item be? Will you take a moment and share it with me here in the comments section or on LinkedIn.
Okay it wouldn’t be fair not to share a few of the not resolutions let’s call them New Year’s Improvements from a number of my coaching clients. Each of these came up on a number of top ten lists we created. One item – one single item was chosen as the one item to execute on this year for each person. They made the choice of which one not me. They need to own it.
- Delegate and trust my people
- Not Micro-managing everyone, everything
- Save Time by going on social media less often
- Stop – Engage – Listen
- Smile More
- Stop taking my family for granted
- Look Up At The Sky At Least One Time A Day
Are you ready to select your one single item you will own and execute on this year? Create accountability and share it with us here now.
