“Champions aren’t made in the gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them―a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have the skill, and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill.” – Muhammad Ali
Simon Sinek asks us to “Start With Why”.
Why does he ask us this question? It’s so we think about and come to grips with this – define our why? Define our desire, our dream, our vision. It’s what Muhammad Ali is saying to us. Yet, even with Covid and lock downs, have we taken this advice to heart?
Have we sat down in a quiet place for 5, 10, 15, or 20 minutes uninterrupted and thought only about this question?
If not – why not?
Where are you heading? What do you actually do each day – why?
“You have power over your mind, not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.” – Marcus Aurelius
Some may have a thought of a dream, a desire, a vision and it seems so big, so out there, that they push it away. Hide it from their thoughts. They don’t address it and it’s gone from their mind.
What if instead this big, out there, desire, dream, vision was put right in front.
Even written out on an index card to place on the mirror to see each morning or an image of it on their phone to see all day long.
As a reminder to do one activity each day, no matter how seemingly small moving in the direction of this desire, this dream, this vision.
“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act but a habit.” – Aristotle
Each day another small step is taken in the direction of something so big. By doing this each and every day a habit is being formed. This habit is you taking an action step toward your desire, an action step toward your dream, an action step toward your vision.
You will, not may, you will face people who will knock your efforts.
Call them dream killers – to yourself, in your mind. They don’t mean you harm. They think they are protecting you. Protecting you from disappointment when you don’t succeed. Don’t argue with them.
Thank them for their advice and then exit stage left and minimize the time you spend around them.
“Persons of high self-esteem are not driven to make themselves superior to others; they do not seek to prove their value by measuring themselves against a comparative standard. Their joy is being who they are, not in being better than someone else.” – Nathaniel Branden
There are people who will take these written words and think of them as cheerleading. No! Far from it. This is a push. Why should anyone allow a desire, a dream, a vision they have in their mind wither away and die! Why should we, who have the ability to provide a push for them to move in the direction of their desire, their dream, their vision not provide this push?
Now it’s up to you.
First be intentional and write out your why.
