Mastermind Groups: The Most Powerful Tool You’re NOT Using!

Mastermind Groups: The Most Powerful Tool You’re NOT Using!

The term “mastermind group” may be unfamiliar to many of us, however, it is often one of the most powerful tools we can use to take our personal development to the next level.

Napoleon Hill first introduced the term in the 1920s and went on to expand the definition a decade later in his book Think and Grow Rich. He described the principles of the group as, “Coordination of knowledge and effort, in a spirit of harmony, between two or more people, for the attainment of a definite purpose… No two minds ever come together without, thereby, creating a third, invisible, intangible force, which may be likened to a third mind.”

Simply put, two minds are better than one.

When we bring a group of people together to analyze, review, and offer each other essential feedback on a specific topic or idea, the power of our thoughts increases exponentially. Being a part of a mastermind group provides access to a power and an energy that gives us the ability to accomplish great things. Consider a time when you have been in the stands at a sporting event or in the audience of a play. If the people around you are energetic, you feel moved to be a part of that energy and often will find yourself applauding or cheering right along with them! The athletes and performers also feed off of that energy and are able to pull off an incredible performance. Similarly, mastermind groups come together in a collaborative environment to inspire growth that cannot be accomplished alone.

There are a few critical and essential elements which should exist in any successful mastermind group. One key element is trust. A total confidentiality must exist. Some groups ask each member to sign documents to attest to the confidential nature of the group in order to protect each other’s ideals and privacy. If we are comfortable sharing the things that make us feel vulnerable with those around us, we are able to open up and really let others in. Commitment is another key. If the group meets every second and fourth Tuesday at noon, everyone must commit to attend. Making personal development a priority ensures that you are continually investing in your growth.

In the best mastermind groups, people come together with like-minded goals and values to offer and obtain feedback, discuss personal and professional experiences, and to have a safe place to tackle issues and problems that they contend with. The experience of being a part of a group like this inspires us to grow leaps and bounds.

Many groups use John C. Maxwell’s bestselling book, The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, as a way to engineer discussions around leadership, coaching, and influence and how to apply those lessons to their daily lives. In a comfortable, confidential environment, members often begin a discussion around one or more of the laws. This draws out personal stories and reveals opportunities for change. So, what better mastermind group to join than one that is led by a certified John C. Maxwell coach, trainer, or speaker?

As John says, “No one gets to the top alone. We all have help.”
