A favorite and consistent habit of every person working aboard an ocean going merchant ship is marking off each day on the calendar.
A big X signifies another day done and dusted.
Sometimes the calendar is a large one on the bulkhead (that’s the wall you land lubbers!) and for others a smaller calendar on the writing desk or by their bunk. It’s a combination of seeing the days gone by and looking ahead to the days when it’s time to leave the ship and go home again.
Other than a few words about the name of a port visited or a special meaning to a date there are no significant comments or notes on the calendar.
During one of my voyages I brought along copies of my research and notes for my MBA thesis which would be completed and published shortly after returning home. Each week of the voyage I’d plan out the time and days when my efforts would be devoted toward writing and weaving my thesis together.
The majority of my fellow crew members thought this was a waste of my time. They were not able to comprehend why anyone would spend their time writing when there were movies to watch or games of poker or darts to enjoy.
Of course there were times when we all socialized together. However, one of my goals during this specific voyage was to complete the draft of my thesis. If it wasn’t done by me – it wasn’t going to get done!
What choices do you make with your time?
Think about this for a moment. Especially the present time after being in lockdown and mostly secluded from in person socializing. What goals do you have which you haven’t taken one step toward achieving?
Stop for a minute.
Think about it.
Write down or type into your smart phone at least one or more of these goals. They may be personal goals, health goals, financial goals, business goals, take note of at least one goal.
Now are achieving these goals really important to you?
Are you prepared to devote a bit of time each day toward achieving one or more of these goals?
Will you do it?
Or will you choose to watch the movie or play poker or play darts?
What if you found out how easy it is to achieve your goals?
Would you get started then?
