Are There Rules In Your Business?

This Month the general topic will be around the International Rules of the Road.

Are There Rules In Your Business?

The latest revisions were published in 1972.

The International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea 1972 (COLREGs) are published by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and set out, among other things, the “rules of the road” or navigation rules to be followed by ships and other vessels at sea to prevent collisions between two or more vessels.

These rules are hundreds of years old in their making.

They are accepted by all nations with ships that go to sea. They were generally followed even during war times. The rules cover every aspect thinkable between ships, types of ships and their seagoing activities.

For example – A vessel engaged in fishing shall not impede the passage of any vessel following a traffic lane. When two power-driven vessels are crossing so as to involve the risk of collision, the vessel which has the other on her own starboard side shall keep out of the way and avoid crossing ahead of the other vessel.

Every ship at sea has someone in charge of the course and direction of that vessel. They must know these rules of the road as the safety of their crew and their vessel depend upon it.

It is a fact that the majority of goods traded, purchased, sold, parts being moved are all done by vessels at sea.

How about the industry you are in? Are there certain rules that everyone must follow?

To the point where it is unthinkable not to follow these rules? Where if these rules are not followed would lives  be at risk?

This is how it is at sea on ships of all nations. Regardless if it is two ships passing each other in the middle of the ocean at night with no one else around or a busy sea lane heading north on the west coast of Africa heading into the Mediterranean Sea. They all follow the rules of the road.

Now aren’t you curious? Let us know what industry you are in and what rules are followed?
