Think about communication

“The single biggest problem with communication is the illusion it has taken place.”
George Bernard Shaw
Communication aboard a ship cannot be left to chance.
Consider the variety of avenues communication takes place:
- Communication between the Captain and the crew
- Communication between the crew members
- Communication with other ships
- Communication from a shore side source such as an official from a port being entered or leaving
- Communication with a pilot boarding the ship
- Communication regarding weather
- Communication from the home office
- Communication to/from family to/from crew members
- Plus more
And there are situational communications, urgency and emergency communications.
None of these may be left to chance or misinterpretation.
The results would be costly and potentially dangerous.
This month the topic will clearly be about communication and ships.
Some of the items mentioned will be explored followed by questions for you to consider in your life and in your business regarding communications. If there is a specific area of communication you would like to have discussed email me here with your specific question. We will do our best to address it in a post. If not – who knows – maybe you will hear directly from one of us.
Another thing about communication I find to be similar to leadership.
From the CEO of the largest publicly traded companies to the owner of a small privately run local bake shop is they recognize the need for communication and leadership to be able to run a successful business. However, how are they with these skills?
What do they actually do with their team to insure they understand how to communicate? How to be an effective leader?
How do your score yourself here?
Would your team agree with your self-assessment?
A National crisis is happening right now in the United States.
Everyone knows about Covid-19 and certainly this is the main priority.
The one I refer to is the lack of effective communication. Plus the overall lack and understanding of what it takes to be a high quality leader. This is NOT a political statement. These are facts. Who does a young person learn from and want to respect that is currently in the spotlight?
How do we highlight this issue? How do we make this a front and center item to be continually built upon?
The answer is certainly not to make it a National Holiday!
Right now for example October 4 is:
- National Golf Lovers Day
- National Taco Day
- National Vodka Day
- World Animal Day
- National CB Radio Day
Yes unfortunately this is what a good majority of people really care about.
Do you think this is a problem?
