How Well Do You Communicate?

How Well Do You Communicate?

What would others say?

Like the people you work with… The people you live with?  What would they say?

When aboard a deep sea ocean going ship traveling internationally you will stop at a variety of ports.  Each one having its own culture, architecture and language(s).

When the ship first arrives at the port the first contacts are made with people from there.

A majority of people initially helping the ship into and at the port speak English.  This would be the Pilot, the Docking Pilot if one is necessary and the Port Agent.  Often the use of the English language goes downhill fast from there.

If it’s your first time in a new port and exposed to a new language, the experience will either be one of adventure and the opportunity to learn, OR one of frustration and being stuck in your own ways of thinking and communicating.

The more often you return to this port, or are exposed to other ports, there are even more ways to expand your knowledge and thinking, OR even more ways to be certain you are right and they are all stupid because they don’t understand English.

Yes, this explanation clearly goes way to one side or the other and of course there are areas in between.

The point is where do you fit into this example when you think about how you communicate with others?

If you manage people and lead people are you open to different ideas?  Are you open to hearing about new ways of doing business?

Do you bring along your own baggage when communicating with various types of people from different cultures, races, sexual preferences?

Are you finding that in your company these are issues you must address – you need to address – and you don’t know how?
