As this month draws to a close here are some quotes for you to consider, think about and stir up some thoughts.
I’ll share a few words of my own – however – how do these quotes apply to you?
How do they apply to your actions in your business and in your life?
Take this opportunity and write down what thoughts appear to you.
Spend some time there. You may discover gold!
“If the highest aim of a captain were to preserve his ship, he would keep it in port forever.”
Thomas Aquinas
This applies to many areas. The first thought to me is the person with an idea or a new way to do something. Many may stay stuck or frozen as they don’t want to deal with potential failure.
How about you?
“If one does not know to which port one is sailing, no wind is favourable.”
Seneca the Younger
This is the in the classic area of my workshops on goal setting.
If you’re trying to get from point A to point B you must begin by knowing where you are right now – point A – and at the very least where you intend to go – point B.
What do you think?
“To reach a port we must set sail.”
Franklin D. Roosevelt
Nothing gets done until you start pure and simple.
“The greatest thing in this world is not so much where we stand as in what direction we are moving.”
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
The action you take is what makes things happen.
However, it needs to be an action toward what you are trying to achieve.
Not just busy work.
“If a man does not know to what port he is steering, no wind is favorable to him. Ignoranti quem portum petat, nullus suus ventus est.”
Seneca the Younger
Along the same lines as above. This quote adds a little twist. You can’t even be helped out as nothing, no one knows how to help you.
“A journey to the unknown shores needs a port, a ship, a wind; but more important than all of them: Courage; courage to leave the known for the unknown!”
Mehmet Murat Ildan
My mentor Paul Martinelli often says: “Jump. Jump and build your wings on the way. You will never start without taking a risk and having the courage to do so.”
“To reach a port we must sail, sometimes with the wind, and sometimes against it. But we must not drift or lie at anchor.”
Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr.
If you stay in one place that is where you will always be.
“It should be our endeavor to cultivate the peace and friendship of every nation . . . . Our interest will be to throw open the doors of commerce, and to knock off all its shackles, giving perfect freedom to all persons for the vent to whatever they may choose to bring into our ports, and asking the same in theirs.”
Thomas Jefferson
What do you think of this quote? How does it apply today, more than ever?
