This will sound simple. It will sound easy.
Many large, medium and small companies do not do it. Entrepreneurs and small business owners are guilty as well. It is so much much easier to get all caught up in so many other items that come up.
Is it possible these are actually distractions presented to test us? A test to see how very committed we each actually are to our vision, mission and goals?
FOCUS ON ONE THING – THE THINGS WE CAN ACTUALLY CONTROL
Everything else – the things we cannot control – we are kidding ourselves if we think we can influence these. They are by definition the things we cannot control.
There is a lot written about large companies learning from small companies and from entrepreneurs. I totally agree.
This should not be taken that there is nothing to be learned from large companies.
Leaders from Delta, Ford, Coca-Cola, United and others have gone on record on this exact subject. In fact I heard directly from Ed Bastian (CEO – Delta) and on another occasion James Quincey (CEO – Coca-Cola)… They have created a culture, a belief, a behavior, that is about a focus on what they can control and only on what they can control.
When Ed Bastian spoke about the importance of this focus he said:
“We have millions of customers, 80,000 plus employees we must absolutely make everyone in these two groups our priority. If you have flown this year and everything went perfectly do you speak about it, use social media to refer to it, do you even remember it? Now if you had one poor experience of any type what did you do during or after that flight? We need to control the level of experience we provide along every single touch point in the organization.”
Now who can’t learn something from that statement and thinking?
Each of us in any size company or organization must have one focus.
Focus on the things you can control.
