How Did You Feel The Very First Time?

What emotions come up when you experience something for the very first time?

How Did You Feel The Very First Time? Mitch TublinI remember the very first hurricane I went through onboard a merchant vessel, which was a bit top heavy at the time. The ship rocked from side to side all of a sudden and didn’t stop for hours. At one point, in the middle of a conversation it happened. Lunch went all over the place as yes, seasick for the first time ever! It was a doozy!

Stop and think for a minute or two. What are some memories you have of first time experiences? Write them down.

  • First time hiring or firing someone?
  • First time starting your own company?
  • First time buying or selling your car?

Now what emotions did you feel afterwards?

For me being seasick aboard a ship at sea, well, it was embarrassing.

How about your memories? Your emotions?

So when someone has been given a leadership role and they have never led before – What are they going through?

Why is leadership talked about so much and revered for its importance, yet, there is this assumption that everyone will just figure it out?

Few companies actually recognize and invest in their people, in fact, encourage their people to take part in leadership training. Not a one or two hour seminar. No, real, proven leadership training. Of these companies, even fewer have leaders at the top who are role models and mentor their team. These are the leaders who know the way, show the way and go the way.

Think about the crisis we are all going through this year.

Do any CEO’s come to mind who have made decisions and acted in a way where the employees feel ‘now that’s a leader’.

Ed Bastian, the CEO of Delta Airlines comes to mind for me. One example is the empty middle seat on flights. Doing his best to keep his employees safe and employed.

Do you have a name or two?

In your daily life how have you been carrying yourself?

With your business, work and family? What can you do better?

Write a few things down that come to mind.

See one or two that you have never done before? Nothing like doing it for the first time!
