Here we are as the first month of a new year comes to an end.
This is a perfect time to ask the question – what has changed?
What actions have been taken toward achieving the goals that we set for this new year?
Where are any of the growth opportunities we discussed actually taking place?
Are meetings being run more effectively now and the participants are more engaged in the process?
Sadly the answers are going to be – None, Nowhere and Not Really.
Maybe there are a few outliers around where it’s not the case, however, for most of us who are being honest about ourselves and our organizations – None, Nowhere and Not Really about sums it up.
How does this happen?
Why is that?
It happens because behavior change isn’t easy.
ON paper, ON the white board, ON the sticky note alongside the others on the wall, it all sounds so…..promising!
The reality is in the execution, no one is leading the charge. No one is exemplifying the new way to do things.
What’s missing is the leadership to ease the necessary behavior change into a reality.
The people at the top, in the leadership positions at the company, are meeting with and speaking with clients, potential business partners, key vendors and solidifying other key relationships. Meanwhile these same key people who were beating the drum for goal setting, planning and accountability only six weeks ago are missing in action!
They persisted that there needed to be changes to behavior, the creation of more growth opportunities, and the abolishment of time wasting, non-productive meetings. We all were in agreement.
Now they are nowhere to be found.
What’s happening isn’t a unique situation. This takes place in numerous organizations. It’s essentially not really understanding what leadership is all about.
It’s certainly not about having a title identifying someone as a leader.
John C. Maxwell often says, “Leadership is Influencing Others, Nothing More, Nothing Less.”
A thought at this time is to take a look around at yourself and your leadership team.
Is anyone influencing others toward what everyone agreed to do this year?
Is it time for a leadership team refresh on what is means to be a leader?
