The often told and butt of numerous jokes are about weather forecasters or weathermen aka weather person.
Here are a few readily available details:
- for a short term forecast of 1-3 days they have a 90 to 95% accuracy
- in a mid-range forecast of 3-7 days they have a 80-90% accuracy
- when forecasting out longer term 7+ days they have a 50-80% accuracy
- further out forecasting becomes a highly variable unreliable statistical measurement based more on historical seasonality for a geographic region
Note: these are my interpretations of available information
Yet, with these known facts many people listen to the weatherman and make plans accordingly.
In fact even repeating the forecast to others as if it were their forecast. The fan base must be real as many on air weather people remain in their roles for many years.
On the topic of the top 10% category – in Major League Baseball a batting average of .300 or higher is generally considered excellent and puts a player in the top 10% of hitters.
This means that the top 10% of hitters in Major League Baseball fail more than 2/3 of the time.
Here’s a further breakdown:
- A hitter who has a .300 and above average is considered excellent- does a great job
- With a .350 and above average they are a high performer and considered exceptional
- A hitter with a .400 and above average is considered uncommon and historically remarkable
Therefore a historically remarkable hitter which would be extremely uncommon in Major League Baseball is going to be successful in hitting less than half the time they try to hit.
My point in bringing up these two examples is for you and your team to get prepared to fail.
In fact, if you are not failing enough, you’re not trying hard enough to succeed in what you’re doing. It’s a fact. Not some B.S. motivational tactic. These are real facts you or anyone may look up and check yourself in less than one minute.
Be clear on what it is you and your team are doing and then go and do it.

After Steve Jobs was fired by Apple, yes Steve Jobs was fired by Apple, his return back to Apple later was instrumental in the rollout, design and strategy of three iconic products:
- the IPOD changed the game in 2001 in the portable music industry
- the IPHONE in 2007 revolutionized the smartphone industry
- the IPAD in 2010 introduced a new category of computers with a tablet design and user friendly features
First Steve Jobs had to fail.
