The concept of personal space has been nuked due mostly to two specific items. Both may in large part be a result of the going on two years soon of lockdowns, forced items of a variety of rules and the emergence of more ‘it’s all about me’ and ‘my family’ than ever before.
Consider for a moment the six foot separation rule.
Where did that come from?
By the way – if you have taken a flight in these last two years, even though the painted or pasted markers are all over the floor where you line up for checking in, asking questions or boarding – have you actually seen anyone stand on the dots six feet apart from the next person? Doubtful.
Regarding the ‘all about me and my family’ … It was not a reality show. The shelves were wiped out of toilet paper, paper towels, tissues, napkins for months in 2020 and 2021. I have seen garage doors left open where inside of them would have given any COSTCO shopper the need to take a second glance. Stacks upon stacks of all of these paper goods that will last the parents and their 2.3 kids until 2030.
So here we are in 2022 and more and more brave souls are heading out and traveling by air, by car, by any means and they are bringing these feelings and habits along with them.
Now, deep breath and forget all about that topic.
Not so easy, right?
Who can you talk to about how you feel about all this anyway?
If I approach this person, well I’m not sure where they stand? Will they be offended by my opinions or what’s just bothering me? As you review the possibilities of who to speak with, is it worth losing a relationship or a friend just because you need to, well basically just vent?
Often when you have a coach you trust and have been working with these type of conversations may come up.
It may not be the full purpose of your work together, but on this day it is exactly what you need so you go there and vent. The great news is you have a trained professional who is there to help you work through this and afterwards you feel like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders.
If this has you thinking – you may want to work with a coach.
Let’s have a chat and see if it’s right for your situation.
