What’s the most effective way to find a job?
I promise to answer the question.
First, allow me to caution you as to the most effective ways to waste your time and efforts looking for job.
- Looking through various social media sites and posting. (Utilizing LinkedIn specifically in a certain way may produce results)
- Sending out your resume to everyone you have ever known in your life, by email, most of them you have never spoken with in a long time. (So how did you even have their email address–that is current?)
- Looking at online job postings and responding online, filling out their questionnaire and then submitting your resume as required.
(a number of these positions are already filled and worse they may be fake postings to obtain your personal information)
These are the top of my mind ones right now, I’m certain there are other ways to waste your time looking for a job without getting any results.
The number one most effective way to find a job is –
Engaging with People in Person.
“Mitch, are you saying actually meet people face-to-face, like in person?”
You are correct!
The second option, however, it’s a way back in the line second option, is a video meeting online face-to-face. No red line through the video option. Cameras on and a face-to-face meeting.
Now for the important part – who are the people to engage with in person?
Here are three specific examples of the people to engage with and why you must engage with them to get results.
First – You will need to know specifically what the job or role is you are seeking.
You will need to be able to explain this clearly and briefly. Therefore the starting point for the people to engage with are your family and friends. Ask them if what you are saying is clear and if they have any connections or know others who may have connections in the field, the companies you are targeting or closely related to those businesses. Remember the point is to get really comfortable explaining clearly and briefly what you are seeking.
Second – The people who you have worked with or for that know you and you have stayed in contact with.
If you haven’t stayed in contact try to start now by reaching out and saying “How have you been” or “How are you doing” – “I was just thinking about our time working together at xyz company so I thought too much time has gone by I should reach out” Or other words you might say to rekindle a relationship without asking for anything else. If this is a non-starter there are people from your school, a former coach or a teacher you may reach out to. Similar to the first group arrange a face-to-face conversation and engage with them.
Third – You should have a list of companies you want to work for.
Are you connected or nearly connected to anyone who works there?
What companies are the main competitors to these companies?
Are you interested in working at one of those companies?
From this list of companies you need to network and meet people who may be able to help you to get introduced to people who work there and have the ability to hire or influence the hiring of people like you – your role and expertise.
You now have the most effective way to find a job.
