Eating Right for Energy, Focus, and Leadership Success

Eating Right for Leaders

Your Health Matters Part 1

Have you ever noticed how your energy shifts after certain meals? One day you feel sharp, ready to take on the world. Another day you’re foggy, sluggish, and wondering why the afternoon feels like quicksand. It’s not your imagination — it’s your fuel.

Just like a high-performance engine needs the right fuel mix, leaders need to pay attention to the food they put into their bodies. Because the truth is, what you eat directly impacts how you think, decide, and lead.

“Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.” – Jim Rohn

How It Started for Me

Patty Ann and I raised four kids — all grown now, all in their thirties. Our first two are twin boys, John and Bryan. About ten years ago, Bryan was living in the Bay Area (where he still lives today) and had gone deep into nutrition — exploring how food impacts healing, recovery, and peak performance.

On one of his trips back to our home in Connecticut at the time, he introduced us to the Whole30 eating plan. Out of curiosity (and maybe a little healthy challenge), I decided to take it on — along with our daughter Eileen.

We expected it might be tough, but what surprised us was what happened after the first thirty days. Both of us noticed a real difference — a noticeable weight loss, even a shift in clothing size. And here’s the thing: we were already pretty fit, exercising every day. What changed wasn’t our activity — it was how our bodies responded to what we were consuming and in what quantities.

That was the eye-opener. Food wasn’t just about calories or taste — it was fuel, it was chemistry, and it was shaping our performance. (Today, Bryan continues that passion as the co-founder of Kitava, a real-food restaurant concept in the Bay Area.)

My Whole30 Experience

The Whole30 is less about dieting and more about discovering. For 30 days, you strip out common irritants like sugar, alcohol, grains, legumes, and dairy. Then you reintroduce them, slowly, noticing how your body reacts.

What I appreciated most was how it heightened my awareness. I discovered that some foods left me tired or distracted, while others fueled me with focus and clarity. Whole30 taught me to listen to my body instead of listening to the latest food fads.

It’s not about following a rigid plan forever — it’s about learning what works for you.

Not One Size Fits All

Whole30 might not be for everyone. Some thrive on a Mediterranean diet rich in olive oil and fish. Others find balance through intermittent fasting, or strength from paleo eating. The point isn’t that one plan is “right” — it’s that we each have a unique chemistry.

Leaders often search for one system, one playbook, one “best practice.” But just like leadership, nutrition is contextual.

What’s best is what fuels you.

“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” – Hippocrates

Why It Matters for Leaders

When you’re running teams, making decisions, and navigating challenges, you can’t afford to run on fumes. If your energy dips in the middle of a critical conversation, or your focus drifts during an important negotiation, that has real consequences.

Eating with awareness is not about perfection — it’s about consistency. It’s choosing foods that keep you steady, alert, and able to bring your best self to the table.

Think About

  • Which foods leave you energized versus drained?
  • Do you eat to fuel, or do you eat out of habit?
  • How might small shifts in nutrition ripple into your leadership presence?

Action Item

For the next seven days, choose one small change.

Maybe cut out processed sugar. Maybe add one more serving of vegetables at lunch. Or maybe commit to drinking more water.

Notice how you feel, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally.

Coming Up Next

Food is only one side of the health equation. In Part 2, we’ll talk about movement — how your body in motion fuels your mind in action.
