Whatever the it is to you.
It is something important and really worth measuring. Something where you have a goal you are striving toward achieving. Are you measuring the progress you are making toward the achievement of the goal?
This may be for you, your family, a family member.
This may be for work – you, your team, your company, a specific project.
If there is no regular measurement of progress how will you recognize when you are not on track – or there is a problem holding things up somewhere?
This may be the first indication that a change in course is necessary.
The adjustment may be a small one or a large one, however, without the measurement process you would not have even known to consider anything as you would not have known there was a problem.
On a defined regular basis the consistent measurement of progress will keep you on track, on time and able to move ahead on the next steps, the next project, the next goal to be achieved which follow the completion of this one.
I have been struck again and again by how important measurement is to improving the human condition. – Bill Gates
It is not just the tracking and finding the problems – although this is super critical to being successful and on time and achieving results.
As the measurement takes place and markers are hit these are times to celebrate.
We all take so much time beating ourselves up over so many things, when we measure and we successfully hit markers we have hit a date, a quantity, progresses to the next step in something.
Lost five pounds in a month – whatever the measurement achieved is take the moment and celebrate it. Include others that are involved and explain the importance of celebrating the moment.
Celebrate what you’ve accomplished, but raise the bar a little higher each time you succeed.
– Mia Hamm
Now that you and others have celebrated this accomplishment increase the importance, the urgency or the quantity – some aspect of the next item in the measurement process. Just a little bit more of one item – create the need to stretch.
You will be amazed at what the accomplishment of the goal and then the celebration to follow will do for the human spirit. Define a bit of a stretch and see what happens.
In many spheres of human endeavor, from science to business to education to economic policy, good decisions depend on good measurement.
– Ben Bernanke
The items Ben should have included are family and community. These spheres of human endeavor depend upon good measurement as well.
Bottom line is if you want results – measure it as you go not just at the end.
