Do You Deliver On Your Promises?

Deliver On Your Promises

Do you deliver on your promises?

Maybe as important or more so would the people who spend the most time with you say you deliver on your promises?

Would the people you work with say you deliver on your promises?

Do you think the people you work for would say you deliver on your promises?

How about the people who work for you would they say you deliver on your promises?

If you answered ‘of course absolutely yes’ to all five questions – well good for you! I’m sure you sleep great every night without a worry or a care in the world.

Most of us make promises that at times we just fall a little bit short on.

It’s not that we don’t deliver or in fact most of the time over deliver. No it’s all in the understanding of the timing, the execution and assumptions potentially of all sides of communication between people. These type of issues will be discussed in a future article.

What we’re discussing today is if someone, especially in a leadership role, intentionally makes promises and then there is no follow-up, no action and no accountability. Over time this type of behavior violates any trust that may have been built up or respect for this individual.

Further, if the promises not followed through on, are important enough people will leave and look for another company to work for.

I specifically remember an individual who I spent a considerable amount of time effort and money with who would more often than necessary make an offer to give something. At times it was a certain role or a responsibility or at other times it was access to a certain high level meeting. At one point I began to inquire specifically about one or two promises made.

It’s the kind of response you never forget.

It was as if there was no knowledge or recognition of what we spoke about or had agreed to between us. It hits you like a Quarter Pounder at McDonald’s this week where E.Coli was present. Really leaves a bad taste in your mouth, or in fact your whole body is shaken to the core.

Why then do certain people continue to make promises they know they can’t keep?

  • Ego
  • Power
  • Makes them feel good.
  • They actually believe people will like them more.
  • Obtain something from a person or group who think these promises may happen.

Do you know why else someone would continue to make promises they cannot keep?
