Well not exactly, this will be explained really soon, promise. Imagine for a moment going without your cell phone – right – no calls, no texts, no service and no email by cell phone, laptop, or pad of your choice – for over two weeks.
Here is the real question – would you EVEN ALLOW IT!
We did it by our own choice on our trip to Antarctica. Is that shock on your face, disbelief or are you wondering why we would choose to give up all contact? No, sorry, you are wondering why would my wife, Dr. Patty Ann, join me and together go to Antarctica for a vacation when it is the start of winter where we live?
Full disclosure is she was taking one for the team as the cold weather is not her favorite time of the year. At least that was the going into the journey story. For those who know me, my sea going voyages have taken me all over the world. There was this one continent which was never stepped foot on by me. Now a few times sailing by Cape Horn in the Drake Passage was close – that is still not the same as stepping foot on Antarctica.
What happened on our trip was magical.
No cell phone or internet. You do have to get over it. Then it happens and it no longer matters. It does not matter at all. In case you are wondering there are no Starbucks to be found on Antarctica either.
The tour company is g-adventures if you want to check them out.
Our base was the ship with about 120 passengers. It was never dark. Sunset is about midnight or so depending upon where we were that day. Then sunrise is about an hour to an hour and a half later. Of course since it is summer in Antarctica now. Yes summer as in 15 to 20 degrees F warmer than the weather at home!
Each day we were able to climb aboard zodiac rafts and land in various areas to hike and explore. The air is clear, clean and crisp. We visited with penguins, seals, many varieties of birds and whales out at sea.
You asked the question so yes we did the Polar Plunge and the water was frigid!
What did we expect as there are glaciers all over the place! We have the photos to prove it. Check them out here!
Toward the last few days of our voyage we were asked if we wanted to submit a few words about what we felt on our trip to Antarctica.
Here are the words written by me –
ANTARCTICA TRIP
If ever there were a place to recognize deep within what really matters in life, it is Antarctica.
The crisp fresh air blowing off frozen glaciers of an age and size to bring any person to self reflective reality.
Home to penguins and seals as well as visiting birds and whales who welcome us, the brief visitor.
How can anyone of us not take a piece of Antarctica with us in our hearts and minds forever more.
