Your Health Matters Part 2
Ever notice how a long day sitting at your desk leaves you drained — even if you haven’t done anything physically demanding? Our bodies weren’t designed for endless hours in front of a screen. They were designed to move.
And here’s the leadership lesson: when your body stagnates, your thinking often stagnates too. Movement isn’t just about fitness — it’s about energy, focus, and the stamina you need to lead well.
“Take care of your body. The mind cannot live without it.” – Thomas Jefferson
A Formal Gym Is Optional
Now, don’t get me wrong — gyms can be useful. For some people, especially in colder climates, hot humid summers, or small living spaces, a gym provides the structure and space needed to move.
But the truth is, movement doesn’t have to happen in a formal gym. It can be woven into your day, wherever you are, with whatever you have. What matters is the consistency of movement — not the location.
My Stages of Movement
In my 20s → Football, rugby, and track were my outlets. I thrived on competition and team sports.
Working aboard ships → Space was limited, so I turned to walking the decks, stretching, and calisthenics. Movement had to be creative and practical.
Today → I’m hooked on Peloton. Cycling, stretching, yoga, walking, and strength classes are all part of my daily rhythm.
The activities have changed, but the principle has not: keep moving.
Why Leaders Need Movement
Leadership requires stamina — the ability to bring your best self to long days, tough conversations, and strategic choices. Movement is the fuel that keeps you steady under pressure.
Think of it this way:
- Energy → Movement keeps your circulation strong, bringing oxygen to your brain.
- Focus → Physical activity clears mental fog and resets attention.
- Resilience → Strong bodies carry stress better, which means calmer decision-making.
In fact, studies show we need to stand up and move every 45 to 50 minutes to stay mentally sharp and physically healthy. Imagine the ripple effect if you built that rhythm into your leadership day.
Not One Way, Make It Your Way
Just as food isn’t one-size-fits-all, movement doesn’t have to look the same for everyone. For some, it’s walking meetings. For others, it’s yoga, strength training, sports, or even dancing in the kitchen.
The key is consistency. Find the type of movement that fits your stage of life and your lifestyle — and do it daily.

Think About
- How much of your day is spent sitting versus moving?
- What simple movements could you weave into your daily routine?
- How might better physical energy improve your leadership impact?
Action Item
For the next seven days, commit to 10–15 minutes of intentional movement each day. Take a brisk walk. Stretch between meetings. Set a timer to stand up every 50 minutes. Notice the shift not just in your body — but in your clarity and energy as a leader.
Closing Reflection
Food and movement may seem simple, but they’re the foundation of sustainable leadership. When you eat right and move daily, you multiply your capacity to think clearly, decide wisely, and lead with impact. Your health truly matters — and it’s the simplest leadership advantage you’ll ever invest in.
