“Wise people speak because they have something to say; Fools speak because they have to say something.”
Imagine if aboard a ship at sea if the Chief Engineer ran the engine room as a fiefdom.
All of the engineers knew not to speak with anyone who are not part of their engine room team about anything going on in the engine room. Unless it was absolutely a safety to the ship and/or the crew issue even the Captain of the ship might not be kept informed about anything going on in the engine room.
Now imagine another scenario where the Chief Engineer and everyone freely spoke about anything and everything going on in the engine room. This might include everything from repairs going on, how well a new piece of equipment was working, and pretty much anything in having discussions or conversations with other crew members.
The crew size on a typical Oceangoing Merchant Ship has a crew of 26 people.
Of this there are the cooks, general area and laundry and space cleaners, the engine room members and Engineering Officers, the seaman and Deck Officers, the Radio Officer and the Captain.
If you consider one option at a time, what type of culture develops among the crew when over a third of the crew communicate in the manner described?
Which of these two options most closely resembles the environment you are in at work, in your business, and in your personal life?
How is that working out for you?
For example: The technology industry is a driving force in today’s economy.
There is huge untapped potential in this field. Are you aware of some consistent behaviors in the majority of these organizations? Here is one – the engineers and the engineering department or group of engineers will generally communicate only with other engineers. The sales team and all sales people will generally communicate only with other sales people and maybe a few marketing people.
What opportunities to be more effective and more efficient and to improve the organization and overall performance are being missed because of these behaviors?
Isn’t is time to introduce a solution if you are in this type of situation?
Are you aware that I offer training and development work in the specific area of communication? Based upon your needs this may be one type of training or another. This may be for you, a group or an entire organization. The communication training and development may be a game style, or one based upon assessments, a combination of both or a completely different style of training. The point is for us to work together to get the conversation started. Let’s begin with a call.
