My article today follows a quick quote from Steve Job. If you’re in a rush, just read this quote or copy it and text to yourself. Then think about it and discuss it with your leadership team, investors or co- business owners. Would you ever risk behaving this way and actually doing it?
Quote by Steve Jobs: “It doesn’t make sense to hire smart people and then tell them what to do; we hire smart people so they can tell us what to do”.
This quote emphasizes the importance of empowering talented people to drive growth and innovation.
Which came first the chicken or the egg?
Recently I read an article and then heard one of the popular ‘influencers’ explaining that spending the effort, time, limited resources and money defining and solidifying the goals and strategies for your business aren’t worth all that without first, yes, without first, getting the systems, process and automation in place. I thought this may have been a new take on Monty Python. It wasn’t. He is really serious.
Now for anyone who already has a profitable business with its legs solidly under it — and this business wants to upgrade their systems, process and automate their business to a new level — this task is filled with numerous choices, costs and traps the uninformed may fall into.
And that’s a profitable business which has proven themselves.
For any business, especially a new one, creating a clearly defined mission, vision and purpose are critical.
Do these have to be written in stone – no, however, the mission, vision and purpose for the existence of this new business should be solid and clearly thought out enough to build the business and the culture for the workforce to carry it through for years to come.
Next up are the near term goals and strategies to attain them.
These are up for revision and changes as needed. Not because they are not being met, only because something has changed or has been uncovered as faulty in the creation of these goals and strategies. More often than not it only takes a slight change, a little bit over this way or that way and the goals and strategies start to click.
It is true that systems, process and automation are important to a business – yes.
However, investing the effort, time, limited resources and money into these too early — or because someone is selling a business on only the upside potential of them once implemented — is a slippery slope.
