You and your career and business are safe and secure right?
Are you sitting still in chair? Peace, stillness and quiet for a moment or two. The chair probably has four legs and when you first sat down in the chair, or in any chair for that matter, you know there will be sturdy legs to support you. Have you ever bent over and checked that the legs were there first? Checked to make sure the chair is sturdy?
You know to make certain the chair was going to work. It remains in one place. The chair isn’t sliding across the floor. It will be there in the same location on the floor tomorrow.
When working aboard an ocean going ship in calm seas this same complacency exists for most of the crew. Everything stays in place. Even when there are some relatively calm seas with some regularity to the waves the ship takes on an easy rolling pattern.
This is where the term “sea legs” comes from.
As your gait changes to accommodate your need for more balance as even though the rolling is regular – it’s well – different. It’s when the first storm creates a roiling sea that the stuff hits the fan!
The sound everyone in the crew will hear first is the crashing of plates and glassware in the galley and the mess hall. Is this why it’s called a mess hall? Chairs are sliding across the floor and anything not secured in your bunk area will find its way to the deck and fast.
Now everyone in the crew aboard the ship begins to secure everything. Regular chairs have a clip hanging underneath the chair. These are now clipped into to the deck to secure them in place so they don’t move.
All of a sudden everyone aboard is using the handrails when going up and down the ladders (stairs for landlubbers).
Let’s think now about your career and business.
Is everything calm and peaceful every single minute of everyday? Is it more like an easy regular up and down in terms of really hopping and then smooth?
How about when the stuff hits the fan? Like for this past year as an example?
Similar to an oceangoing ship which has been built with handrails on all of the bulkheads (walls for landlubbers) and the ability to secure chairs into the deck? What have you prepared for and done in advance to be prepared for the rough seas you, your career and your business will certainly face again and again without warning?
