The Fall Season may not seem to be the time of year to work on your lawn and your garden. Your work will certainly not be recognized as it is in the spring and summer when items are planted and the garden is designed for viewing enjoyment. In actual fact, Fall work is a high payoff activity.
When you spend a few hours across a week for a number of weeks in the Fall cutting down vine growth, trimming back shrubs, trees and anything over grown from the summer, the time spent will definitely payoff in the spring. There will be weeds in various areas hoping to hide there throughout the winter.
What does this have to do with running my business and my career?
In business and in your career, paying attention to areas which may have gone too long and have been overlooked must be addressed without delay.
One example is addressing the question of hiring, job descriptions and promotions.
- In the business you are in what is the process for hiring a person?
- Is there a written job description which closely matches what the person will be actually working on?
- Is this the same as how the person will be measured for their performance?
- Is that measurement of their performance how people are actually considered for promotion?
These may seem like very logical steps when written out in this manner.
In reality you have no idea how many established companies do not address any of these items.
If there is one area many companies do follow it may be in creating the written job description. However, when the person begins work there are numerous expectations and assignments which were never discussed or part of the official job description. Similarly the process for measuring their efforts is not exactly a process. The promotion methods are not widely known. All of these are how many companies operate day in and day out.
An employee and the company are better served when each of these areas are addressed. Without becoming a five hundred page government style document, a guideline for each of these areas would be quite helpful.
What does it take to make this happen?
Start. Begin to write up how this might look and how it might work in your organization.
Bring in a few sets of eyes within the company and have them offer their point of view on what has been working and what has not been working. If this sounds like too much work and effort and you and everyone else already has too much on their plate already, bring in an consultant to conduct the effort. Wenkroy International LLC offers consulting services in a variety of areas including framing up situations just like this one.
Tend to your business garden now before you have to and it will be a high payoff activity.
