How Many Times Am I Going To Be Told – Be More Positive
When you speak to yourself in your own head — are you generally positive and reinforcing of your goodness and your positive qualities, or are you more often kicking your own self for something you said or didn’t say, or actions you took or didn’t take… and on and on.
Which is it for you A – Positive or B – Negative?
If you’re being totally honest it’s B and join the rest of us!
Why? Why do we do this to ourselves?
Have you ever thought about why the news media focus is on violence and negative stories versus positive uplifting stories?
It’s because humans have a ‘negativity bias’.
Social psychologists say humans tend to pay more attention to bad seeming information than good seeming information. So the news delivers the depressing stories we all seem to crave.
This is why it will take an effort to form a habit of speaking to yourself with positivity and uplifting thoughts and not negativity and self-berating thinking.
For some people affirmations are the way to go for self-talk.
I personally find affirmations from people I admire and their quotes or statements.
I’ve written out these words and who said them on index cards, calendar pages, book marks and all sorts of things that I’ll regularly come across.
When I do see them I’ll read them aloud and consider how these words will apply to me.
Here are a few examples from my personal collection:
“High self-esteem comes from forgiving myself and helping other people.” Ben Taylor
“Most people are clear on what they don’t want in life. What they are not clear on is what they do want in life.”
“Know yourself! The unexamined life is not worth living.” Socrates
“There is no passion to be found playing small – in settling for a life that is less than you are capable of living.” Nelson Mandela
My suggestion is for you to start your own collection.
Positive statements or quotes that get your wheels turning and bring you energy and excitement.
Contact me if you need help figuring this out for yourself or where to place these words.
For me there are some just about everywhere.
As I write this out on my laptop, right next to me is a statement on a magnetic mini-poster:
“Whatever the mind can conceive and believe it can achieve.” Napoleon Hill from ‘Think and Grow Rich’
For you to make this about you, you just need to embrace the concept and work with it. The results are not instantaneous, however, the results are positively impactful.
