The Art of Letting Go and Delegating with Purpose

The Art of Letting Go

“The best executive is the one who has sense enough to pick good people to do what he wants done, and self-restraint enough to keep from meddling with them while they do it.”
— Theodore Roosevelt

October is the month when every leader feels the squeeze. Deadlines close in, the energy ramps up, and that quiet inner voice says, “Just push a little harder—do a little more.”

But here’s the paradox: finishing strong rarely means doing more. Often, it means letting go—with purpose. When we hold too tightly, momentum stalls. When we trust wisely, momentum multiplies.

Control Feels Safe—Until It Isn’t

For years I equated control with responsibility. Early in my maritime career, I thought leadership meant steering every detail myself. The logic seemed sound: if I kept my hands on the wheel, nothing could drift off course.

But it turns out, white-knuckled leadership is exhausting—and unsustainable. The tighter you grip, the less space others have to step in, learn, and grow. Control gives the illusion of certainty, but what it really produces is a ceiling. Delegation—done right—removes that ceiling. It releases energy. It builds ownership.

Delegation Is Not Abdication

Letting go doesn’t mean dropping responsibility. It means sharing it, intentionally. Delegation is alignment, not abandonment. It’s about clarity of vision and confidence in people.

When leaders delegate with purpose, they communicate two things at once:

  • I trust you.
  • This work matters.

That combination fuels motivation more than any pep talk ever could.

The Renewal That Comes From Letting Go

“You don’t inspire your teammates by showing them how amazing you are. You inspire them by showing them how amazing they are.”
— Robyn Benincasa

Delegation is often framed as an efficiency tool. I see it as a renewal strategy. When you delegate effectively, you don’t just lighten your load—you expand your team’s capacity and their confidence. You create space for innovation. You give others the opportunity to lead.

As the year winds down, take a look around your organization or your family or your community. Who is growing because you chose to trust them? That’s the true mark of leadership—not how much you’ve done, but how much you’ve developed.

Letting Go Takes Courage

Let’s be honest: the hardest part of delegation isn’t tactical—it’s emotional. Leaders wrestle with questions like:

“If I’m not the one doing it, am I still leading?”

“What if they don’t do it the way I would?”

But leadership maturity is realizing your value doesn’t vanish when you step back. It multiplies. Letting go requires self-confidence and humility at the same time. It’s choosing to believe that success shared is success amplified.

Think About

Where in your leadership this month are you still holding the ball when someone else is ready to run with it? If you released control just a little—entrusted, equipped, and stepped aside—what new energy might appear in your team, your projects, or even your own mindset?

Action Item

This week, choose one area where you’re still the bottleneck.

  1. Define what success looks like.
  2. Identify one capable person to own it.
  3. Communicate your trust—and then truly let them lead.

Observe what happens when you stop managing every motion and start multiplying momentum.

Write it down somewhere you’ll see it:

“Where I let go, others grow.”

Personal Note from Mitch

In rugby, you can’t score if you never pass. It takes timing, awareness, and trust. You pass not because you’re tired, but because you see the opportunity for someone else to break through.

Delegation works the same way. The art of letting go is not about losing control—it’s about creating movement, momentum, and mastery. When you lead with that mindset, your influence doesn’t shrink—it expands.
